Shallow Depth of Field with a Cheap lens!

Shallow Depth of Field can be amazing! Especially when we are talking portraits. Shallow Depth of Field requires a lens with a large aperture and you know that with a large aperture comes a large price tag. Well today for two minute tuesdays we want to share a couple of tricks to help you get the most out of your less expensive lenses.

How to get a shallow or I should say the shallowest depth of field possible with your not so wide lens!

In this video we are using a Nikon 70-210mm f/4, we have been using this lens nonstop since we took it out of the closet! We love it, especially because of the close focus distance. Is it as sharp as our Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8? No, but it's also $200.00 versus $2,000.00!

So if you are broke, on a budget or simply do not see a reason to spend some major bucks and want shallow depth of field, listen up and learn! There are a couple of rules when it comes to getting the shallowest depth of field possible, you follow them and you should be alright!

Rule 1 : Get as close to your subject as possible!

Rule 2: Open your aperture as wide as it will go!

Rule 3: Zoom out to the longest focal length of the lens!

Follow those 3 simple rules and shallow Depth of Field is in your future!

Obviously the wider the lens the better so if you really want that wide aperture fast lens we highly recommend the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 OS lens over the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR believe it or not. The Nikon is nice, but I'm not sure it's worth $1000.00 extra price tag! The Sigma just had a huge $300 price drop over at bhphoto.com so take advantage of it! $300 bucks is an extra speedlight or three!

And if you are not into that whole VR, OS, IS stuff, then save even more cash by buying the regular version. We will have a post about the benefits and Vibration Reduction, Image Stabalization and so on! I'm not sure why all these companies come up with different names for the same thing!
